As introduced in our recent blog post: the RETROTEC The Double MTB 26”. It was a bike that came together naturally after its owner was drawn to the frame in our shop.

Its owner has plenty of bikes, yet deliberately chose to go single speed.
I think that's one ideal answer when it comes to enjoying a bike, using it to the fullest, and keeping it for a long time.
What we're introducing this time is a frame Circles ordered from RETROTEC, and the complete bike we built up from it.
RETROTEC 26” Single Speed MTB
Behind it was not just specs or looks, but our thinking about what a bicycle should be.
RETROTEC
RETROTEC is based in Napa, California.

Originally a brand that made custom beach cruisers,
it was taken over by Curtis Inglis, who refined it into the sports bike brand it is today.
What makes RETROTEC so interesting, I think, is how it keeps the feel of those days while standing up as a custom-order-quality bike.

The beauty and light weight of the frame, its ease of use and great handling.

Those qualities are all there, of course, but this is a bike whose appeal only really comes across once you actually ride it.

It moves along far better than its looks would suggest, and you find yourself naturally drawn into how it rides.
When we ordered this RETROTEC 26” Single Speed MTB, the idea we had in mind was very simple.

To present the single speed MTB style anew, in a form for today.
A bike with no derailleurs, where the rider's feel and intent come through just as they are.
Keeping It Simple

This model comes in one size only and is single speed only. No derailleurs, no complicated mechanisms.
All you need is the strength to push the pedals and the will to choose where you're going.
Precisely because it's so simple, the rider's feel comes through directly.
It's not a bike that's only about being easy, but that feeling is part of what makes it so appealing.
A Beautiful, Distinctive Frame

This frame has a shape that naturally draws you in when you see it.
The line running from the top tube into the seat stays, and the balance of the slightly oversized chromoly tubing.
And a clean, single-color finish.
It isn't flashy, but it has the kind of presence you could live with for a long time.
A Circles-Style Parts Build
We put this complete bike together so as not to break that atmosphere.

For the stem and seatpost, brakes and brake levers, and the hubs and cog, we went with PAUL COMPONENTS.
A California-based brand that keeps making things with a commitment to in-house machining.

Beyond function, their parts have the precision and durability to be used for years, and a certain warmth to them.

For the cranks, WHITE INDUSTRIES M30.
Another maker with a long history of building things in America, offering real reliability within a simple design.
The way they transfer your effort so honestly feels like a great match for this bike.

For the bars, HUNTER CYCLES' Smooth Move High Rise.
True to a brand that is also a frame builder, it's a bar with an excellent balance of shape and feel.
Its moderate sweep back toward the rider and its rise create a natural position.
These brands all share the same context of American craftsmanship,
so they blend effortlessly with the RETROTEC frame.
As a result, without losing the atmosphere this frame has
Freedom on the Other Side of Paring It All Down
This frame isn't meant to broaden what you can do with it.
If anything, it's designed to deliberately narrow what it can do.
In exchange, “how to ride it” is left up to the rider.
It's simple, and that's exactly why you start to see things,
and I think that's the kind of bike this is.

This parts list, chosen to match the philosophy behind the frame, is one answer we arrived at in building it up.
We feel that much of this bike's appeal comes across best
when you actually see it, touch it and ride it.
One size, and one gear.
We'd love for you to experience that clean-cut simplicity just as it is.

Choosing something new is fun, of course,
but deliberately choosing not to change is another way to enjoy things. We'd be happy if this RETROTEC 26” Single Speed MTB became the spark for that.
Stock Frames
We also currently have stock frames of this RETROTEC 26” Single Speed MTB in two colors.
If you're interested, be sure to check them out too.

The stock is the two colors in the center of the photo. Only Traffic Purple and Gentian Blue remain.
The colors are limited, but every one of them looks made for summer.
We hope you'll consider one.
