Description
Tradition and innovation combine in the ultimate single speed disc hub.
PAUL COMPONENT has been meticulously manufacturing bicycle components in a renovated garage in Chico, California since 1989, which was a former oil distribution facility for Texaco Oil until 1926. Paul believes that a great product should be based on simple ideas, easy maintenance, and a high level of functionality.
In 1996, PAUL COMPONENT created the world's first single-speed MTB hub, W.O.R.D.. The name stands for Wacky One Speed Rear Device, and at a time when 7-speed and 8-speed bikes were the norm, the idea of daring to remove the derailleur and enjoy a simple, tough bike was considered stubborn and a bit crazy. However, its uniqueness attracted many riders, and it soon became a cult favorite. Now, the Disk WORD Hub is the latest model that has evolved while inheriting that tradition.
The secret behind the overwhelming smoothness of this hub lies in its extremely high-precision machining technology. The bearing bore is finished to an astonishing precision of only 0.0002 inches (about 1/8th the thickness of a human hair) and uses high-quality, user-adjustable sealed cartridge bearings. In addition, the hub shell design, honed through years of manufacturing and real-world riding, provides the ideal balance of light weight and stiffness to handle even the toughest riding conditions with ease.
Meticulously machined piece by piece in our Chico, California workshop, these hubs are compatible with 12mm thru-axles and fit disc road, cyclocross, and of course MTB. The rotor base has 6 holes (ISO standard), and the beautifully machined design down to the base not only looks great, but also contributes to weight reduction. The traditional mid-flange silhouette and the latest technology are fused together in this gem.
*Please note that the product photo shows the model for fixed gears, but the actual model is compatible with freewheel. Fixed gears cannot be installed.
