As 2020 draws to a close, news of a major cold snap has arrived. It’s not necessarily because of that, but I had been thinking that this season would be the one to finally get a new pair of cycling shoes that are warm in the winter and impervious to rain—so the news definitely gave my purchasing decision that extra push.
With that said, I picked up a pair of LAKE MX145-X shoes, and this morning's rainy commute was their debut. The temperature wasn't all that low, but my feet stayed dry and didn't get cold at all, making for a comfortable ride to work.

Cycling shoes that can withstand harsh conditions
The MX145-X winter shoe is warm enough to defeat harsh winter cold. It uses a BOA dial for quick adjustments and a secure fit, and features an upper made of waxed canvas, leather, and a highly waterproof membrane, making it an SPD shoe capable of handling winter rain and snow.
Grip for a variety of road surfaces
The sole uses HYPER GRIP’s Ice Lock, which offers excellent grip to keep you secure even on poor road surfaces. While options for winter shoes are generally limited, this pair performs well in various situations, including gravel riding, snow riding, rainy commutes, and long-distance touring.
The secret to the warmth is in the insole
The insole is also well-designed for cold protection; the underside is waffle-molded to create an air layer, and behind that is a thin aluminum sheet to block out cold coming up from the sole. The surface is also coated in wool fiber to ensure heat retention.
Wide last that fits Japanese feet well
By the way, these feature a wide last design that is easy to fit to Japanese foot shapes, making them a comfortable choice for many people.
Just like the Ultraz Winter Gloves, which have the best heat retention among all ASSOS gloves, many people hesitate to buy items with such limited use because they think they can just get by by enduring the discomfort. But once you actually own them, you realize how valuable they are every season. When that season arrives, you find yourself thinking, "Finally, it's their time to shine!"
