BASSI BIKES (hereinafter BASSI) is an original brand developed by the Montreal, Canada-based bike shop C&L.
When people think of BASSI, the model that boasts unwavering popularity is the Hog’s Back, but hidden in its shadow, they are crafting some truly wonderful bikes as well.

The Le Montreal, named directly after the city where they are based.
Originally an unofficial model ridden by staff and friends, it became an official model after passionate requests from cyclists living in Montreal.
Inspired by classic 1980s touring bikes, the Montreal is a well-balanced frame that can be assembled freely according to your interpretation—be it a commuter, porter, randonneur, or cyclocross bike.

I mentioned it was hidden in the shadows, and honestly, there’s a part of me that feels we haven’t properly conveyed how good this bike is, so please allow me to share its charm again in this blog post!
1-inch threaded headset / Rim brakes

First and foremost, what catches the eye is the use of a 1-inch threaded headset and rim brakes in this day and age.
"The fusion of the old and the new is what makes BASSI unique," says Julian from BASSI, and the Le Montreal is a bike that perfectly embodies that.
Of course, it’s true that the latest standards are excellent, but not everyone necessarily benefits from them, and sometimes this level of simplicity is just right.
The charm of this bike lies in the room it leaves for assembly, allowing the rider to make use of existing parts and truly make it their own tool.
132.5mm semi-horizontal dropouts

The rear dropouts are semi-horizontal with a 132.5mm spacing.
That's right. It uses the same dropout system found on the legendary SURLY Cross-Check, which is no longer in production. It can accommodate both road-standard 130mm hubs and MTB-standard 135mm hubs, allowing for setups ranging from single-speed to geared—a level of versatility that isn't possible with current thru-axle standards.
Naturally, it’s fully equipped with all the necessary eyelets to mount fenders and racks.
Wheel sizes tailored to frame size

Learning from past archives and bringing in an "old-meets-new" sensibility, the Le Montreal possesses a level of freedom that rivals the SURLY Cross-Check, but I believe its approach to frame sizing is its most distinctive feature.
The size range is:
46cm (26″)
49cm (26″)
52cm (650B)
55cm (650B)
58cm (700C)
61cm (700C)
The wheel size changes depending on the frame size.
This is the key point: by using smaller wheels for smaller frame sizes, it achieves a horizontal top-tube style, allowing even smaller riders to enjoy a comfortable position while maintaining classic, beautiful aesthetics.

At Circles, we carry the four sizes from 46cm to 55cm, which support 26″ or 650B wheels. Compared to 700C, these wheels naturally lend themselves to wider tire choices, allowing for a broad range of riding styles from city commuting to touring.
The manufacturer-rated tire clearance is 47mm, but we have confirmed that this build can accommodate 26×1.95″ (approx. 49mm) tires while still maintaining proper clearance. It’s in my nature to want to fit wider tires, so I really appreciate the margin of extra space here, which resonates with the "Fatties Fit Fine" philosophy of SURLY.
Frame sets are back in stock
With that said, the Le Montreal is back in stock, including sizes that were previously unavailable. Starting with this batch, the seat clamp has been updated to an integrated frame design.

We’ve also built an original complete bike

Additionally, I have prepared an original complete build interpreting this Le Montreal in my own way.
With respect to a certain legendary brand that is no longer with us—one I’m sure they also referenced—I’ve assembled it with some significant inspiration (I'll let you guess which one when we meet!).
Semi-drop bars, wide tires, and even single-speed. If you’re looking for something for daily use that also lets you have a little fun, it’s wonderful to be able to fully utilize a bike like this.

On a side note, I chose cantilever brakes for this build and used the SHOVEL RESEARCH Fork Mounted Brake Cable Hanger for the front. Not only does its beautifully finished, detail-oriented design satisfy the desire for ownership, but it’s a subtle yet effective upgrade that keeps the wiring clean and reduces cable housing flex for improved braking power.
I believe the overall parts configuration has come together quite well, though I did get a bit carried away with some of the parts choices. If you’d like something more realistic, I’m happy to offer similar suggestions. If you're interested in the Le Montreal, please feel free to consult with our staff.

BASSI's original Bobby Bar, now Made by NITTO!
Additionally, the original BASSI Bobby Bar is now back in stock, manufactured by NITTO.

The Bobby Bar is a modern, original BASSI-designed flat handlebar that offers a relaxed shape for comfortable off-road control, providing a perfect blend of agile handling and graceful riding.
The grip area is generous, allowing for long grips, and it can be cut to your preferred width without hindering lever placement. It was designed with large handlebar bags like the SimWorks Voyageur Handlebar Bag in mind, and the width of the bend aligns perfectly with the bag's mounting points.
Furthermore, the back-sweep allows for a natural cable routing flow between a front bag and the handlebar.
The original Taiwan-made Bobby Bar was intended for MTBs, but this NITTO-made version complies with the road ISO standards, which are even stricter than those for city/trekking bikes. Whether you're enjoying a graceful trail ride or a tough touring trip, you can enjoy the ride to the fullest with rock-solid rigidity and reliability. Beyond its beauty, there is no compromise on practicality.
If you're building a Le Montreal with flat bars, this is definitely the top choice.
