The ALL-CITY Nature Boy Disc is the quintessential single-speed cyclocross bike. We built this specific one at the request of an owner who wanted to use this popular, aggressive frame—a favorite among single-speed cross riders—as a comfortable bike for city riding and commuting.
With a single-speed setup, the first challenge is the gear ratio. Considering the hilly terrain where the owner lives, we went with a slightly lighter gear. We also chose a high-performance hydraulic disc brake system to ensure safe riding on dark descents during the commute home.
These brakes allow you to decelerate firmly with little effort, reducing fatigue on your arms and fingers. Since standard completes typically come with mechanical disc brakes, being able to choose components like this based on your needs is the privilege of a "zero-build" (custom frame-up build).
Unlike typical CX bikes designed solely for cyclocross racing, the Nature Boy Disc has the clearance for large tires, which we took full advantage of by installing WTB / NANO Comp 700x40c tires. This setup handles everything from city bumps during the commute to suburban gravel paths, no matter the road conditions.
We paired the WALD 1372 front basket with the SIMWORKS BY NITTO Obento Rack. Needless to say, they are a perfect match. Furthermore, we equipped the front wheel with a dynamo hub and mounted a dynamo light to the Obento Rack, so there is no need to worry about the battery suddenly dying on a dark night! We’ve created an absolute power-couple combination that’s as iconic as the Nankatsu golden trio.
This bike is great for daily commuting and errands, but also perfect for longer rides on the weekends. If you spot an interesting-looking dirt path, you can dive right in without hesitation. Simply remove the front rack, and you're ready to tackle a cyclocross race.
