As mentioned in our previous entry, the new helmets from Smith Optics have arrived!

The new releases are two models: the NETWORK for on-road and the SESSION for off-road. These are mid-grade helmets that inherit the features of the flagship models while being refined to be more accessible to a wider range of riders.

Let’s compare the differences using the road models. On the left is the flagship OVERTAKE, and on the right is the new NETWORK. The biggest difference is that Koroyd®︎, one of the signature features of Smith helmets, has been placed only on the sides, allowing for larger ventilation openings. This provides both the new NETWORK and SESSION with highly efficient ventilation performance.
Although the surface area of the Koroyd structure has been reduced, its density has been increased and it is strategically placed at the temples, where the risk of impact is highest. Furthermore, they feature the MIPS system, which has been adopted by many manufacturers recently. This structure is designed to deflect impact in the event of a fall, playing a vital role in reducing damage to the brain, such as concussions.

As a brand that started with eyewear, Smith shows a strong, signature commitment to the integration of helmets and sunglasses. There are channels shaped to perfectly fit the temples of your eyewear along the curves of the helmet, allowing them to be held securely while still feeling like one integrated piece. You can safely stow them away when you want to take your sunglasses off during a ride. In fact, I've ridden gravel with this setup, and they haven't fallen out yet (as tested by staff Shige).
The on-road model, the NETWORK, comes with a velcro-detachable visor, a nice design touch that makes it easy to use not just for serious riding, but also for touring and commuting.
The off-road model, the SESSION, is equipped with an adjustable visor. It's a style recommended not only for trail riding but also for events like OMM BIKE, bike packing, and touring. If you want one helmet to handle both trail rides and touring, using this off-road model on the road is absolutely a great option.
While they are still a relatively new brand in the helmet market, that is exactly why Smith is known for manufacturing products that aren't bound by existing helmet concepts. While they are by no means inexpensive, these mid-grade helmets offer exceptional performance.
It is said that three years is the standard lifespan for a helmet, and choosing the right one is crucial for your own safety. At Circles, we stock a range of recommended colors, with a focus on the Matte Gravy color, which is basic and easy to match with any outfit. Please come by and try one on.
