RAL Exposure FAQ's
RAL Exposure is a frame that serves as a canvas for you to paint your own "likes."
While there are some limitations, it is basically designed to allow you to combine parts from various eras. Thanks to its simple design and popular standards, you can assemble it yourself with a bit of knowledge, motivation, and the right tools. Here, we provide some supplementary tips to help you when customizing a complete bike or building one up from the frame.
▶ Handling Chromoly Frames
Moisture is the natural enemy of chromoly frames. Before assembly, be sure to apply rust preventative spray or grease to the inside of the frame to take preventative measures against rust so you can use it for a long time.
▶ Installing a Kickstand
A kickstand can be installed if there is enough space to ensure it does not interfere with the tires or crank. Please be careful when working, as overtightening the mounting bolts can cause the frame to deform or break.
It is also effective to sandwich cotton bar tape or a rubber tube between the kickstand and the frame to prevent wobbling, or to apply a thread-locking agent to the bolts. However, the most important thing is to regularly check for loose bolts or shifts in the stand.
▶ Installing Fenders
Fenders are recommended for comfortable riding in heavy rain or after the rain has stopped. Installation requires not only clearance between the tire and the fender, but also space on the frame side. The key is ensuring appropriate clearance for the fender you are installing at the three main points: the fork crown, seat stay bridge, and chain stay bridge.
▶ Frame and Crank Combinations
The frame is designed to be compatible with cranks that have a clearance of approximately 150mm or more between the inside of the left crank arm and the inside of the right crank arm. Please ensure a clearance of approximately 5mm between the chain stay and the inside of the crank arm so they do not touch when the crank or chain stay flexes under riding forces.
The maximum chainring size is intended to be 36T.
▶ Single Speed and Rear Geared Compatibility
You can convert the rear to a geared setup by using the included "little extra" replacement end with a derailleur hanger.
However, since the frame features a simple design intended for single speed, it does not come with outer cable stops for shift cables. Please get creative by using aftermarket cable stoppers or similar solutions.
▶ Chainring Chainline
The frame's chainline varies depending on the rear hub used. Please check the specifications, such as 53.5mm for the SURLY Ultra New Hub, 51.6mm for the PAUL Word Hub, or 49mm for geared hubs. Adjust the position of the chainring to match the chainline of your rear hub.
