What exactly is a bicycle wheel? It’s a vital component for moving the bike forward, and as they say, "fashion starts at your feet," meaning it has a huge impact on the bike's appearance. This is such a critical part: the "wheel." This time, I’d like to talk not about performance, but about how wheels are built.
In the world of bicycle wheels, there are two types: "factory-built" and "hand-built."
"Factory-built" refers to wheels that manufacturers ship out as finished products. As shop mechanics, we typically don't need to do much adjustment to them (though minor adjustments are often necessary, and some wheels simply require a mechanic's touch to be usable). Because of how they are produced, they are often adjusted for the general public or for professional/semi-pro use, and they aren't built with the individual rider in mind.
That is where "hand-building," a specialty here at Circles, comes in.
The advantage of "hand-building"—as the name implies—is that by selecting the components one by one and having us, the mechanics, assemble and finish them, we can build a wheel that is the perfect fit for the rider.
