Description

A major contributor to the formation of San Francisco's underground comics scene in the 1960s and 1970s, Robert Crumb broke and even expanded the boundaries of the graphic arts, redefining comics and cartoons as a countercultural art form.

This book draws from Robert Crumb's 50-year career, including drawings taken directly from the publications in which his work first appeared, comic book tear sheets, magazine and album covers, 1960s and 1970s broadsides, Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, Oakland and Manhattan's Lower East Side, tabloids from other counterculture enclaves, and exhibition ephemera are all part of his unique, bawdy, and super unique world. It is also a must-read for Crumb fans, featuring the historical 18th and 19th century works that inspired Crumb, as well as pages from his sketchbooks from the 1970s and 1980s.

About Robert Crumb:
Born in Philadelphia in 1943, Robert Crumb has used the popular medium of comic books to address the absurdities of social conventions, political disillusionment, irony, racial and gender stereotypes, sexual fantasies and fetishes. Influenced by Thomas Nast, Honoré Daumier, T.S. Sullivan, and James Gilley, his drawings are a satirical critique of contemporary consumer culture, and he is a comic artist whose expression is characterized by the importance of an outsider's perspective.
