A tool for checking the wear of increasingly complex chains has been released by ABBEY BIKE TOOLS.
Traditionally, we are taught to avoid cross-chaining—never using the "small-small" or "large-large" gear combinations—as much as possible. However, with the widespread adoption of 1x drivetrains today, situations where the chain is frequently subjected to cross-chaining have become more common.
Furthermore, the arrival of Flattop chains has changed the landscape of how chains wear.

The main issues with measuring chain wear are the subtle differences in roller diameters on SRAM Flattop chains and the lack of precision in commercially available wear tools. A difference in roller diameter can result in a 0.2% variance in the wear rate, affecting replacement criteria. Additionally, many chain checkers are laser-cut, and the compounding of these tolerances can further reduce measurement accuracy.

The Abbey Chain Wear Plate is a tool designed to bring precision to chain wear measurement. It accommodates different roller diameters and also allows for the measurement of lateral (side-to-side) wear.
The V-shaped notch accurately centers the roller, and by aligning the pin with the hole, it eliminates the influence of roller wear to achieve highly accurate measurements.

To measure lateral wear, remove the chain from the bicycle, hold it vertically by pressing the center of a roller against the boss (the rectangular protrusion), and observe how much it sags.
A value greater than "6" indicates that shifting performance has degraded, and this can be improved by replacing it with a new chain.

CNC-machined from billet aluminum to maintain an extremely tight tolerance of 0.0002 inches (0.005mm), this is a superb tool that delivers both durability and precision.

An ideal chain checking tool.
