Hello. Baki here, currently struggling with the recent temperature fluctuations!
When I commute from Seto to Nagoya, I end up feeling hot by the time I arrive... Choosing the right clothes is always a challenge... However, there is one thing I wear without hesitation: my helmet.
Since your body is exposed on a bicycle, a minor fall or collision can easily lead to an irreparable situation. That’s exactly why helmets are necessary.
Furthermore, starting April 1, 2026, a traffic violation notification system—the so-called "blue ticket" system—will be introduced for cyclists aged 16 and older. As safety awareness is more important now than ever, why not take a moment to rethink your helmet choice?
I’m sure many of you are thinking, "But I don't know which helmet to choose!" In this article, I will introduce the different types of helmets and how to select one.
Types of Helmets
Helmets can be broadly categorized into three types!
⚫︎For Road Bikes
These models are designed for higher speeds on relatively smooth road surfaces. They include aerodynamic models with streamlined designs and lightweight models built for speed.
⚫︎For Mountain Bikes
These models offer more impact resistance and provide protection all the way to the back of the head. Versions with visors are designed to protect you from tree branches and sunlight.
⚫︎For City Riding
These models are attractive for their designs that blend well with city environments and their excellent cost-performance.
There are many other designs, such as those for competitive sports. Because they are specialized for their intended uses, some helmets end up with quite quirky silhouettes, haha.
Time trial helmets are built with a single-minded focus on aerodynamics. Their unconventional designs exist to help riders cover flat terrain as quickly as possible.
Helmet Fitting
Everyone’s head shape is different. If a helmet doesn’t fit properly, it may not provide its full protective performance. Plus, it's a shame if you can't enjoy your ride due to pain or discomfort!
K PLUS, a brand from Taiwan, designs all its helmets to fit Asian head shapes. The NOVA pictured here is the #1 choice among our staff. If you struggle with side-to-side fit, this might be the one for you!
Width, depth, and the shape of the opening vary by manufacturer and model. Recently, there are many "Asian fit" models available that are easier for Japanese people to wear, so please try some on in our shop to compare. You are sure to find a helmet that fits you perfectly!
What is MIPS??
When researching helmets, you’ll often see the term MIPS. Many people wonder what it actually is. Let me explain that functionality a bit.
MIPS
For example, imagine falling head-first onto the ground. An angled impact generates rotational gravity, which increases the severity of the shock. By inserting a movable liner between the helmet shell and the user's head, the helmet slides upon impact. This disperses the rotational energy and minimizes the damage to the brain.
MIPS appeared about 10 years ago and was a luxury feature found only on high-end models at the time. Now, it is even adopted in entry-level models—SMITH, for instance, is thorough enough to use MIPS in all of their helmets. Now that they are more accessible, you should definitely consider MIPS as a priority.
Conclusion
There are various types and roles for helmets, but as you look for specific uses and comfort, the right models will naturally narrow down.
