【microSHIFT】Expanding your options: SWORD Bar End Shifter

"I love finding more options within the materials provided."
For someone with my personality, choosing bicycle components is one of the true joys of the hobby.

The brand microSHIFT is the perfect fit for times like that. And now, they’ve introduced a new item to their SWORD gravel component line that expands those choices even further, so let's take a look at it right away.

WILDE Rambler – Sage Green

Wait, where are the SWORD parts?

At a glance at the WILDE Rambler in the photo, you might not notice where the SWORD parts are used. The rear derailleur looks like an Advent X, and the brake levers look like standard independent units...

That’s right, what I want you to pay attention to this time is the SWORD Bar End Shifter, which has just been installed at the end of the drop handlebars.

What is microSHIFT? — A Brand That Expands Your Choices

First, let’s recap what microSHIFT is. Established in Taiwan in 1999, this component manufacturer specializes in the development of drivetrains. Based on the philosophy of "providing high-quality components to every rider," they have generously poured excellent technology into their products regardless of price point.

Many of you may remember them as having a lineup of parts compatible with major manufacturers like SHIMANO and SRAM. However, starting with the Advent series released in 2019, they have taken a unique approach different from their competitors and now command a solid presence in many markets, including mountain bikes, gravel, and commuter bikes.

Pros and Cons of Bar End Shifters

Now that we've refreshed our knowledge of microSHIFT, let's take a look at the star of the show: the bar end shifter.

As the name implies, bar end shifters are shifters that attach to the ends of drop handlebars. They feature a simple structure that provides reliable shifting, and because the shifter mechanism itself is simplified, the risk of failure is reduced and maintenance is easier. Their durability is a major appeal, making them reliable even for harsh touring and gravel rides.

Furthermore, unlike STI levers, they allow you to effectively use the space in front of the handlebars, which provides the advantage of greater freedom in attaching bags and baskets. The cable routing is also cleaner, making them a great match for bike packing and other styles where you need to carry gear.

Although having the brakes and shifters separate requires some adjustment for those used to operating shift-brake integrated levers, the intuitive operation and high degree of customizability remain a unique charm of bar end shifters.

The SWORD Bar End Shifter is compatible with the Advent X series, so those already using Advent X can seamlessly transition to custom bar end shifters.

Furthermore, this type of microSHIFT shifter can also be used as a thumb shifter if you replace it with a flat bar mount, meaning you can keep using the shifter even if you change your handlebar style. It expands even the options for your handlebars based on your own ideas. Amazing.

The Joy of Expanding Possibilities

Rather than "finding the best choice from a set of given options," it is about "expanding the choices yourself." That is the essence of the microSHIFT brand.
