【BIKE of the WEEK】RETROTEC CYCLES 700c Tourer

I have returned safely from my 18-day trip to the U.S., centered around the MADE Bike Show. More than just looking back on it now, I had a strong sense throughout the trip that the days were flying by—a testament to how fulfilling it was. My goodness, it really was a whirlwind. Especially the first half leading up to the show itself (haha).

So, following up on the BLACK CAT BICYCLES from last time, I’d like to introduce another wonderful bike unveiled at MADE. This time, we’re looking at a stunning piece from RETROTEC!

RETROTEC CYCLES is based in Napa, California, an area famous as a wine-producing region. The brand was originally a storied custom beach cruiser manufacturer; builder Curtis took over from the previous owner and evolved it into what it is today—a marque that elevates those vintage aesthetics into custom-order quality sports bikes.

The round top-tube style, which carries on that cruiser aesthetic, is an RETROTEC icon you won't soon forget. Curtis has a deep understanding of every way to enjoy a bicycle, from racing to casual riding, and the bikes he builds perform with a speed and efficiency that you’d never guess from their looks. It’s no wonder so many people are hooked the moment they throw a leg over one.

This year marks Curtis’s 30th anniversary of running RETROTEC. (Keep an eye out for the 30th-anniversary design T-shirts in the photo above, arriving soon!)

Maintaining a frame-building career for 30 years is truly worthy of respect. Actually, after the MADE Bike Show ended, I went on an overnight bikepacking trip with some of the builders, and Curtis—who is 55 this year—was as energetic as ever, showing no signs of slowing down. He’s still incredibly fast on the bike; I was deeply struck by his sheer strength as a cyclist.

Of all the bikes Curtis had on display at the show, the one I’m introducing today stood out with a special presence.

You might see the photos and think, "Are those 650B wheels?" It’s an optical illusion caused by the large frame size, but this is a tourer-interpreted bike assembled with voluminous 700x50c tires.

While it’s easy to be drawn to the wonderful three-color paint job by Curtis’s go-to painter, Dark Matter Finishing, the "RETROTEC-ism" is truly infused in the fine details, such as the custom rear rack.

Rather than a Japanese-style tourer focused on pavement, this is more of a "dirt-tourer" interpretation designed with off-road enjoyment in mind. Still, carrying capacity is essential to enriching any journey. The rear rack, designed with panniers in mind, joins the seat stays in a way that beautifully hugs the curve of the 700c wheel. It’s a minimalist, simple structure, but it’s packed with Curtis’s ingenuity to ensure it’s strong enough for worry-free touring—a true work of art.

Furthermore, the eyelets connecting the seat stays to the rack are hidden on the backside of the stays, and the clean, integrated look from the front is astounding. For this build, the rear rack isn't just an add-on; it’s an integral part of the frame’s identity. It’s a detail that captures Curtis’s commitment to making it look as beautiful as possible. That said, it can be removed for pure, unburdened riding depending on the situation—the kind of flexibility that only custom-ordering can provide.

The lines from the oversized headtube down to the original segmented fork are beautiful, and the fillet brazing throughout is drool-worthy. The inclusion of a dropper post on this type of bike is a stroke of brilliance that fits its "dirt-tourer" personality perfectly. It makes navigating unexpected dirt descents while touring feel completely secure.

He chose SimWorks Taco Pedals and a Mowmow Bar. I personally love the parts spec, which showcases Curtis’s sense: he’s gone with thumb shifters, uses gravel-oriented GRX components, but opts for XTR brakes for their superior stopping power on rough roads and while fully loaded.

It’s a rich, versatile bike that lets you enjoy touring, then shed the bags once you arrive to explore local trails, or just take the rack off for everyday riding. If I were forced to choose only one bike for the future, this is the kind of machine I might pick. It’s truly a wonderful build.

Beyond his 30 years of proven technical skill, it’s Curtis’s wonderful personality that makes so many people want to have him build their bikes. Actually, our boss has already put in a request for an exciting new production from Curtis, so stay tuned for that as well! Of course, we are always accepting custom orders, so if you’ve found yourself drawn to the bikes he creates, please feel free to reach out and consult with us.
