Moving away from an era where "the latest equipment is always best," bike builds have diversified to prioritize features meant for fun rather than racing. One of the new options in this landscape is the microSHIFT Acolyte, a 1x8-speed component group.
A 1x / Wide-Range 8-Speed Group
Updated with modern standards, the Acolyte delivers a wide gear range, simplicity, and top-tier shifting performance at an affordable price. It provides all the necessary features for builds like kids' MTBs or a first bike.
What are the features of the Acolyte 1x8-speed?

Feature 1: Wallet-Friendly Components
Most of all, its affordable price point is a huge plus. It is the most reasonable way to achieve the dream of a wide-range 1x drivetrain.
Please note that the shifters are only available in trigger style for flat bars and are not compatible with drop bars.

Feature 2: Durability and Ease of Maintenance with 8-Speeds
Much like the 9-speed Advent, the benefit of an 8-speed setup is the use of a thicker, more durable chain. Fewer gears mean a simpler structure, making it easier to clean and adjust shifting. It is also less prone to breaking, which helps minimize mechanical trouble on the trail.
This is a truly classic microSHIFT move—prioritizing usability over chasing the latest trends.

Feature 3: Super Short Cage for Small-Wheel Bikes
As 1x drivetrains have become popular, cassettes have grown larger, forcing rear derailleur cages to become longer. However, this creates a problem for small-wheel and kids' bikes, where there isn't enough clearance between the derailleur cage, the tire, and the ground.
The Super Short Cage rear derailleur in the Acolyte lineup was created to solve this very issue.

Feature 4: Three Cassette Options (11-38T, 12-42T, 12-46T)
In addition to the 11-38T cassette for the aforementioned super short cage derailleur, there are 12-42T and 12-46T options for the medium cage derailleur. You can choose the one that best suits your intended use and bike frame.
All these cassettes are compatible with standard Shimano HG freehub bodies, so there is no need for specialized hubs.
What kind of bike does Acolyte fit?
With its long-lasting durability and attractive price point, the user-friendly Acolyte is a great choice. Let’s imagine some potential builds.

For Everyday Commuting
While Acolyte was originally positioned as a simple 1x drivetrain for kids' MTBs, here at Circles, we believe its affordability and durability make it perfect for daily commuting as well.
It only works with flat-bar shifters, but if you’re planning a flat-bar build—such as a custom frame from SURLY—it becomes a highly attractive option.

For Small-Wheel 1x Conversions
Naturally, it’s also ideal for converting small-wheel bikes to a 1x setup using the super short cage. The photo shows the new "All-Packa" model from Bike Friday; since it’s designed with off-road riding in mind, the microSHIFT super short cage is a perfect match.
If you are debating which components to use for a new build or an overhaul, please consider adding it to your list.
