Rim tape is my second-least favorite bike part! Use VELO PLUG instead!

A little while ago, I posted about VELOCITY’s VELO PLUG on my Instagram Story, and it got quite a response.

It’s one of my favorite products and a long-time bestseller, but clearly there are still plenty of people who don’t know about it. I guess I haven’t spread the word enough—sorry! VELO PLUG is seriously great.

VELO PLUG eliminates the need for rim tape

A Veloplug is a small component that covers the holes in a rim in place of rim tape.

It plugs the holes where the spokes pass through the rim, keeping them from puncturing the inner tube when you inflate the tire.

Rim tape is my second-least-favorite bike part!

That’s right, I hate rim tape… lol. It’s flimsy and delicate, and can cause problems like flats without you even realizing it.

The frustration of rim tape degrading or shifting…

It gradually shifts, isn’t wide enough, catches on tire levers, or wears out and needs replacing after a year or two. Rim tape is a sensitive little troublemaker. It can often cause slow leaks, and it’s a pain that you have to remove the entire tire just to find the cause.

Veloplugs solve all the problems with rim tape

VELOCITY offers Veloplugs as an alternative to rim tape. They’re revolutionary.

Instead of wrapping the rim with tape, you fit these plastic pieces into the holes one by one.

You just fit them into the holes like this

They don’t shift or come out, and even after about seven years of use, they show no signs of wear. On rims with fewer holes, they’re lighter than tape. They solve all the downsides of rim tape.

VELO PLUG is why I choose VELOCITY rims

They seem to work with non-VELOCITY rims too, as long as the specs match, but it’s best to use them with the manufacturer’s own rims. In fact, I’m so sold on them that I’d choose VELOCITY rims just because they support VELO PLUG.

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to work with the popular A23 rim (?), but plenty of people must be using rims like the Atlas and Cliffhanger. If that’s you, give Veloplugs a try instead of rim tape. It’s a low-cost upgrade that’ll save you a ton of frustration! Maximum pressure: 400 psi (lol)

Compatible with red plugs

Compatible with yellow plugs (rims with eyelets)

※They’re not recommended for some models because they may not fit the inner curve of the rim, causing the edges to lift or fold and potentially damage the inner tube.

By the way, my least-favorite part is…

Without a doubt, sealant takes the number one spot. (I’m open to dissenting opinions.)
Why, you ask? Well… let’s leave the reasons and insults for another time.
I don’t use tubeless tires except for racing, so I’m a big fan of VELO PLUG for tubes.

It seems that high-end carbon wheels sometimes have rims without holes, or tubeless Veloplug-like products designed specifically for them, with rubber gaskets. Still, you’d think there’d be more innovation in this area.
