[WILDE] Rim-brake modern randonneur, by the name of Spelljammer

There is a new model being released this spring from WILDE called the Spelljammer.
While it has already been announced by the brand, it is currently in production, and this will be the one and only production run.

To put the Spelljammer in a nutshell: it’s a modern, fillet-brazed, rim-brake randonneur bike, absolutely packed with Jeff’s meticulous attention to detail.

We are expecting it to arrive at Circles around June, but ahead of that, we wanted to take a look at the backbone of this bike.

The Spelljammer is truly a dream bike realized. It came to be because it was a bike that Jeff and his colleagues at WILDE wanted to own even in this day and age, and the circumstances finally allowed them to make it a reality.

Are you familiar with the classic Space Horse, which Jeff worked on during his time at ALL CITY? You may know it as a disc-brake model from its later years, but in fact, it was a rim-brake model when it first launched.

Drawing inspiration from the versatility of the SURLY Cross-Check—an iconic bike in this segment—as well as the modern gravel category, the Spelljammer is Jeff’s unique contemporary interpretation of the classic randonneur bike.

What is a Randonneur Bike?

While there are many vague definitions floating around on the internet, Jeff and his team’s interpretation for this project was simply:
“A bike for long-distance riding.” It had to be a bike capable of efficiently covering distance over various road surfaces, while being equipped to handle riding in all weather conditions.

The Spelljammer takes a modern approach to this genre without becoming overly fixated on historical conventions. It features modern specifications, such as triple pack mounts and a threadless headset that can be easily adjusted with just a hex key, eliminating the need to carry a large headset wrench.

If it’s a "modern interpretation," why rim brakes?

All of WILDE’s production bikes are tested to the strictest ISO standards for their respective categories.
To pass these tests, disc-brake bikes require thicker (and thus heavier) fork legs and chainstays compared to rim-brake models.

One of the benefits of using rim brakes is the ability to use lighter tubes, resulting in a supple and smooth ride. WILDE already offers excellent disc-brake models like the Rambler and Rambler SL, and above all, Jeff’s own love for the classic aesthetics of rim brakes and his desire to pursue that further is why he decided to build it this way.

Why just one production run?

Actually, there is literally only one craftsman left in Taiwan capable of the delicate finishing work required for such extensive fillet brazing.
Furthermore, he is elderly, runs a farm, and is practically retired; he only agreed to take on this job on the condition that this be his last project.

In other words, the Spelljammer is a frame that turns a production-level, fillet-brazed frame into reality—something that would otherwise be impossible. This project was only possible because of Jeff’s deep ties with manufacturing in Taiwan from his ALL CITY days, and above all, his genuine passion for wanting to build it.

By the way, with fillet-brazed frames, the time spent hand-filing the joints is equal to the time spent welding the frame together. This manual labor is an incredibly daunting process, and it is a fact that this kind of fillet finish is an art form that is fading away.

Even so, Jeff insisted on this beautiful finish, and as a non-negotiable point, he also opted to use a traditional PACENTI PBP (Paris-Brest-Paris) fork crown to match the frame.

When you think of it as a production frame, you might honestly feel that the Spelljammer is expensive, but it is a fact that this frame is not something that can be easily made, and we can clearly feel Jeff’s desire not to compromise at all on his craftsmanship.

What is so special about the dropouts?

Besides the rim brakes, there is also a specific focus on the dropouts. The dropouts used on the Spelljammer are directly derived from the lineage of this bike.

The aforementioned rim-brake version of the ALL CITY Space Horse became something of a cult icon at the time.
It was a bike with surprising affordability, excellent handling, and a smooth ride. It goes without saying that it was the bike that made ALL CITY known to a wider audience and was a major milestone in Jeff’s career in the bicycle industry.

The dropouts he designed during his time at ALL CITY with his friend Anna Schwinn featured an excellent construction: they retained the benefits of a semi-horizontal shape—such as single-speed compatibility, wheelbase adjustment, and flexibility for fender mounting—while ensuring the wheel was securely held even when using quick-release skewers.

Jeff has brushed up the casting mold for those dropouts, which hold a special place in his heart, for the Spelljammer. Of course, the spacing is 132.5mm, so you can use either your 130mm road hub or your 135mm MTB hub.

Bonus: Origin of the Name

Since his ALL CITY days, Jeff has always approached model naming with care and humor, so we asked him about the origin of the name Spelljammer.

Simply put, it comes from the RPG game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D).
It is the name of a title often referred to as "D&D in space," where players use magical ships to fly freely between fantasy worlds. Jeff says he named it with the hope that this bike would be like one of those magical ships, allowing you to ride freely over long distances.

Jeff sent us a sample frame, so we built it up ahead of the release.
I’ve already ridden it, and thanks to the rim brakes, the bike is light and leaves an impression of a very smooth ride.
Thanks to the slightly higher stack—which could be said to be inherited from other WILDE models—it seems comfortable for long-distance riding.
You can test ride it at our Circles store, so please come by to check it out. We are, of course, also accepting reservations.

We are planning opportunities for test rides at Circles Tokyo as well, which we will announce at a later date.
