【WILDE】Handmade with TLC

—Why do WILDE bikes feel so good to ride?—

"There’s something strangely right about how this bike rides."

There is a specific feeling you get when riding a WILDE bike that makes you want to say exactly that. It’s light off the line, yet it has a core of stability. You don’t get tired even after hours in the saddle, and above all, there is a sense of connection, as if your own intentions are being translated directly into movement.

The secret lies in a “specific choice” WILDE makes when designing their frames.

The WILDE lineup—Rambler, Rambler SL, and Supertramp. The one thing these three models have in common is the use of their proprietary steel tubing: "TLC Tubing."

TLC Tubing is a seamless, double-butted chromoly steel tube set that WILDE has blended uniquely for their needs.

TLC stands for Tough, Light, and Compliant. This isn’t just an ideal; it is the concrete performance and value system WILDE seeks in their bike construction. Perhaps it's less about giving the material itself a special name and more about naming the feeling they hold most dear.

That said, there is no magic in steel itself; the magic resides in the choice of which tubes to use.

To choose tubes is to choose a philosophy

In reality, there are only a handful of companies in the world capable of manufacturing high-quality bicycle tubing. One of them is a manufacturer called FOUNDERLAND in Taichung, Taiwan.

This name might not sound familiar to you. That is because the company’s tubes are distributed under various brand names. Whether it’s SURLY’s 4130 Natch, ON-ONE’s DN6, or the now-defunct TRAITOR BIKES’ Founderland 4130—the labels may differ, but they are all tubes with the same origin, utilized under different names by different brands.

In a 2006 MTBR forum post, a representative from ON-ONE shared this:

"The tubing we use is made by Founderland in Taichung. The exact same material, same line, same dies, but when put into a Reynolds box, it becomes 'Reynolds 520'."

WILDE didn’t initially intend to name their own tubing. However, as they were repeatedly asked about the materials used in their Taiwan-produced models, they realized that the phrase "Handmade with TLC" perfectly encapsulated their approach, and they decided to adopt the name.

Incidentally, Founderland’s 4130 was also used at ALL-CITY, where WILDE founder Jeff previously worked, and was named "612 Select" there. 612 is the area code for Minneapolis, ALL-CITY’s hometown. The name was intended to signify a sincere, grounded approach that didn't misrepresent the material.

The same material doesn't make the same bike.

"So, does that mean every bike made with Founderland 4130 is the same?"

──The answer is NO.

Every brand has its own design philosophy and priorities. Some brands choose maximum durability, some prioritize lightweight, and others prioritize stiffness. The ride quality changes drastically based on the diameter and wall thickness of the tubes chosen.

For example, a bike built with a 38mm diameter down tube (0.9/0.6/0.9 wall thickness) will have a completely different level of stiffness, compliance, and ride feel than a bike built with a 31.8mm down tube (0.8/0.5/0.8 wall thickness).

WILDE's Philosophy: Tough, Light, Compliant

WILDE chooses their tubing intentionally for every model and every size. This remains true whether it's a custom build or a Taiwan-produced model.

They are constantly searching for the optimal balance based on factors such as:

  • Intended use (touring / cross-country / trail / bike packing / racing, etc.)
  • Frame size
  • Rider physique and preference
  • Weight and mounting position of equipment

And the three factors WILDE consistently prioritizes are those mentioned earlier:

  • Tough: Built to last. To be called a classic, a bike must first be robust enough to ride for years to come.
  • Light: Effortlessly light. A weight that feels natural to handle without compromising durability.
  • Compliant: Comfort is speed. A supple ride that isn't too stiff, making even long rides less fatiguing.

These aren't just convenient side effects of materials or manufacturing methods.
They are the result of sincerely addressing the question of "how do we want to ride?"

These elements dwell within every Rambler, Rambler SL, and Supertramp model.

It isn't the material that speaks, it's the choice.
