First, please take a look at this photo.
A HARO EXTREME. You don't see these very often these days, do you? It really gives off the vibe of that era.
The photo shows the bike with all the parts stripped down, but this is a bike we have been performing overhauls and part replacements on for several years.
The reason it was brought in this time was...
The customer reported a strange noise, but it turned out there was a crack in the seat tube...
Even though it was mainly used for city riding, it had been used for a long time... this is truly what you call riding it into the ground.
We discussed getting a new bike at this opportunity, but since the customer was so attached to this bike and the parts we had overhauled several times were still usable, we proposed a plan to swap almost everything except the frame, and it's now complete.
The frame is a Surly Long Haul Trucker.
Except for the headset and stem, almost all the parts were transferred from the previous bike.
The customer felt the handlebar height on the Haro was too low and uncomfortable to ride, but with the LHT's longer head tube, it's incredibly easy to ride. If they feel like it, they can swap in some 2.0″ block tires and it’s been reborn as an ATB that’s fun for trail riding, too!
In this case, the frame became unusable and we transferred the parts, but I believe this is the proper way to use things. I’m happy to have been given the opportunity to do this.
Of course, I want you to take good care of your still-active bikes with regular overhauls and ride them hard! (Thankfully, we have various bikes coming in for overhauls every week.)
