【SimWorks】The Doppo Locust has arrived.

The SimWorks Doppo series, which we unveiled at the MADE Bike Show this past summer. The Doppo Locust—the first to lead our charge in renewals and new releases—has finally been released.

Although we initially planned for an autumn release, we just barely managed to sneak it in before the end of the year. We apologize to those who have been waiting eagerly!

I must say, even if it is tooting our own horn, the new finish looks incredible. We have redefined the Locust as the perfect bike for the dirt touring and trail riding we love, and I am confident that it is the ultimate machine for anyone who wants to center their riding on off-road exploration.

I was in charge of assembling the complete bikes for this launch, so I’d like to share those two builds today and offer my own take on what the Locust is all about.

With Ramble Bar Assemble

First, this build. The star of the show here is, without a doubt, the Ramble Bar, developed through the teamwork of SimWorks and Portland’s premier bike shop, Golden Pliers.

It’s an ultra-wide 710mm bar that can accommodate a large front bag, yet it still offers plenty of backsweep. When I interpret the term “Turbo Cruising,” which Kevin at Golden Pliers—the person who came up with the idea for this handlebar—frequently uses, I think it’s the perfect match for a bike like the Locust.

For wheels, I chose 29-inchers with Super Yummy tires. I wanted a rugged wheelset, so I went with the Standalone 01; coincidentally, the Grey color of the rims matched the frame perfectly, which I really love.

While it’s not exactly a speed machine, it leverages the rollover capabilities of 29-inch wheels to go anywhere, and thanks to the bars, it lets you ride in an upright position to soak in the surroundings. It’s a build designed for that style of riding, while still being perfectly capable for daily use.

With Little Nick Bar

I wanted to push the dirt-riding capabilities even further than the previous bike, which is what led to this build.

By combining the Little Nick Bar with Touring Bar Ends from Rick at Hunter Cycles, the bike is comfortable on long dirt roads while providing extra leverage for the climbs to the trailhead. And of course, if you find a sweet trail along the way, these bars let you enjoy it aggressively or mellowly as you please. By the way, SimWorks used to make a bar called the Calsaga Bar, and I can't help but feel it would have been a perfect fit here too.

I also chose the Super Yummy 29″ tires for this build with dirt touring in mind. As for the rims, I went with the Outback from Astral Cycling, which we started carrying a little while ago. This rim covers everything from gravel riding to dirt touring and trail riding, and it’s a great match for the width of the Super Yummy tires.

Naturally, I wanted to keep the bearing components within the same family, so I chose White Industries for the hubs, headset, bottom bracket, and cranks.

If you want to enjoy trails even more, you could build up a second set of 27.5″ wheels with wider tires, essentially getting two bikes in one.
