The cyclocross season is finally kicking into gear.
Whether you were riding hard all summer or hibernating in preparation for the winter cross season, it’s time to get moving! Entries for the Nobeyama Cyclocross are now open. (Let’s all go again this year!)
To kick off this season, a customer who wanted to start cross racing ordered a Breadwinner frame back in the spring, and it was recently built up, so let us introduce it to you.
Breadwinner Cycles are crafted by the duo of Tony Pereira and Ira Ryan.
By leveraging their long experience as builders, they create frames designed not just for daily riding, but with a focus on long-term durability and the ability to handle longer distances over many years.
The frame built up here is their CX model, the "Hole Shot."
As the name implies, it’s a CX race bike built with the intention of grabbing that hole shot. Even though it’s steel, it accelerates beautifully, lacks any harshness, and has a pleasant flex that makes it impressively easy to handle on dirt.
Of course, beyond racing, it’s a bike that can be repurposed for dirt touring, winter road riding, and more.
This build was focused on racing, using components from the customer’s previous bike. For brakes, we went with TRP CX9s, prioritizing control, and paired them with custom wheels featuring Velocity Major Tom rims and Chris King R45 hubs. The tires are Dugast Small Birds, carefully coated with Aquasure to help them survive the entire season.
We also set up the cassette with a Gevenalle Houp. You remove the top cog and install the Houp as a spacer on the low side. This prevents the rear derailleur from interfering with the spokes when shifting into the lowest gear.
It’s going to be a fun bike to get covered in mud at races and gravel rides all winter long!
