Hello! It’s Daisaku!
Man, the heat has really ramped up all of a sudden, hasn't it?
When these hot days continue, memories of that event—racing across Hakuba with a map in hand, running through ski slopes and thickets, feeling the heat and the chill of the river—come flooding back.
Yes, the "OMM BIKE."
Personally, this will be my third time participating.

Recommended Bicycle Repair Kit for OMM BIKE
In the blog post by Da-chan published earlier, they introduced the essentials, recommended clothing, and items they're personally interested in, so definitely check that out!
This time, I’ll be focusing on the "bicycle repair kit."
- Multi-tool
- Compatible inner tubes
- Tire levers
- Portable pump (or CO2 inflator), or an electric pump these days
- Missing link (compatible with your chain speed)
- Chain link pliers
- Zip ties (about 1–3)
- Chain tool
During a race, troubles that wouldn't normally happen during regular rides or commutes can suddenly occur. Personally, I've encountered things like a broken chain or failed brakes.
Make sure you're prepared to handle these issues on the spot and get riding again. (The vibe when you're stuck and completely helpless... *bitter laugh*)
Points to Consider Before Buying a Multi-tool
You need to prepare a lot of things, but there is one point you must check first.
It's the "bolts used on your bike."
Specifically these four points:
- Stem
- Front and rear derailleurs
- Brakes
- Thru-axle
The bolts used here vary by brand and model. By knowing which size hex wrench is needed, or if it's a Torx or Phillips head, you can choose the multi-tool that best suits your needs from the available options.

Here are my personal recommendations.

BLACKBURN Big Switch Multi Tool
Price: 5,500 JPY (incl. tax)
This reliable multi-tool comes with almost all the bolt sizes and the chain tool mentioned above. Since the handle provides a longer grip, you can firmly tighten even stubborn bolts like thru-axles.
(It even has an illustration for checking the time, making it perfect for OMM.)
It comes with a dedicated storage pouch, and if you have something thin like tire levers, you can store them together, which is super convenient.
If you don't have a standard multi-tool yet, this is definitely the one!

SCHWALBE Tire Lever
Price: 770 JPY (incl. tax)
I've used various tire levers as a mechanic, but these are currently the easiest to use.
Their thinness and width are perfectly balanced, allowing you to scoop up and remove even tight, tubeless-ready tires.
When mounting, there's a hook on the handle to hold the tire in place, which might save you from sweating buckets while trying to get the tire back on!

WOLF TOOTH 8-Bit Pack Pliers – Multi Tool
Price: 11,110 JPY (incl. tax)
These are the pliers needed to install and remove a missing link.
The easiest and most reliable way to fix a broken chain during a race is to use a "missing link," and having this tool will give you peace of mind.
It also comes with bits for turning screws, making it a reliable all-in-one item!

CRANK BROTHERS Road Mini Pump Klic HP
Price: 6,100 JPY (incl. tax)
Here is my recommended portable pump. You can change the angle of the handle, and because there's a hose connecting the body to the valve, you can change the orientation or press it against the ground while inflating (this is important).
There are two types of portable pumps: one suited for high pressure like road bikes, and another for gravel or MTBs that can push a lot of air in one stroke.
Choosing the right type for your tire size will be a lifesaver when you really need it!
Your "Good Luck Charm": Zip Ties

Broken spokes or damaged parts don't happen often, but they might. Zip ties are like a good luck charm—you can use them to keep riding after an unexpected incident or to secure something that has come loose.

Keep 1–2 tucked away in your bag!
If you want to practice, come to Culture Club!
Many of you may have the tools but have never actually changed a tube or installed/removed a chain.
Our sister store, Culture Club, holds the "Grease Monkey Bike School" regularly every month, where we lecture on how-to's related to bicycles using your own bike.

In addition to the regularly scheduled sessions, we can also accommodate individual requests. If you're interested but can't find a session that matches your timing, please contact us via our website!
Ready to go, now just have to enjoy it!!
I think this should solve most of your preparation concerns, right?
If you have any questions or are a first-timer and aren't sure about something, feel free to drop by the shop and talk to us!
I'll be participating on the day, so I look forward to seeing you all!
See you then!
