We’ve been sharing the staff’s “My First Bike” episodes, so let’s do the same for “My First Pair of Cycling Shoes.”
The first pair of clipless shoes I ever put on were crisp white road shoes from LAKE, made with kangaroo leather. They looked dignified and beautiful, and since they were one of the top-tier models in LAKE’s lineup, I couldn’t help but buy them for their exquisite detailing and excellent functionality.
However, there was a small trap hidden there...
That’s right: not being a Newtype, I wasn’t able to pilot that white machine very well.
Being a top-tier model means it’s built for seasoned cyclists. The kangaroo leather offers a perfect fit, but the issue was the sole. Such shoes use thin, stiff carbon soles designed for high-performance power transfer, meant for those with rigorous training. If someone without the necessary skill uses them for long periods, fatigue starts to accumulate, and simply wearing them becomes stressful. In other words, high-end doesn’t always mean “best”—there is a model that fits everyone’s needs. Once you’ve fully utilized the features of your current pair, that’s when you step up.
So, if you ask me which clipless shoes I recommend for beginners, I’d suggest these two. Even though I’m recommending them as first-time shoes, don’t underestimate the functionality they pack.
