I think it was back when I was still a student that I first went on a ride with "Paisen" (senior). I remember he took me to Ametsuchi Pass while I was riding a Giant aluminum road bike I’d just finished building. Since then, whenever the weekend came around, we often went on rides together, and we frequently participated in local criteriums, the Suzuka 8-Hour endurance race, and road races as well.
Ever since we took part in the Rapha Gentlemen’s Race, I started seeking out more adventurous rides than our usual practice sessions, and for the most part, my new discoveries of "I never knew a road like this existed" are all thanks to him. We truly respect him as a solitary cyclist who never stops the adventure of riding; in the Tokai area, it feels like there isn't a single road he hasn't traveled.
Last year, this same Paisen acquired an ultimate exploration machine called the Seven Cycles evergreen SL, and he happily enjoys adventure rides every weekend.
It was six months after his evergreen was delivered that he decided to order another bike, wanting to further expand the potential of his riding and fully feel the essential benefits of a Seven bike built specifically for the individual—one that fits their body perfectly and is tailored to their riding goals and style. Perhaps even he didn't expect to be so captivated by Seven, but he had no hesitation.
His next bike is a road racer designed to go faster and further. Based on the countless bikes he has ridden and the intuitive feel he experienced with his previous evergreen, he chose the axiom SL as a bike simply for enjoying the roads he currently seeks out on his weekends.
In the past, he used to push himself while staring at numbers for racing and training, but his approach to riding has changed dramatically. Now, he enjoys undulating mountain roads while looking inward, focused on finding the best line and enjoying local delicacies along the way. This bike was crafted to perfectly meet those requests.
When it comes to a bicycle frame, the most important aspects are whether it has the intended suppleness and appropriate flexibility, and where that flexibility is directed. Butted tubes like those on the axiom SL are thicker at the ends and thinner toward the center. By looking at the points where the thinning begins and how much material is removed along the tube, you can clearly see the unique character, rigidity, and suppleness inherent in a custom-made frame.
By carefully targeting various points for butting, one can create a bicycle that realizes the rider's desired feel and handling. Regardless of how the times change or what new products emerge, such a bike remains a one-of-a-kind presence, unaffected by trends or the cycle of popularity.
The paintwork, which uses a special scheme featuring circles that represent our shop, Circles, was left entirely to Seven's paint team, and it is truly a sight to behold.
Seven's paint team boasts overwhelming skill and high-quality craftsmanship in the field of custom paint. In their paint booth, they meticulously apply and remove masking and layer clear coats to fulfill every customer's request, helping to bring a unique worldview to life. He opted for the most premium paint job available, and his boldness in leaving the entire creative process to them was nothing short of impressive.
Some might ask, "Why are you on your bike all day long?" but he ignores such things and just keeps pedaling along the path he has chosen. The joy of opening up new roads, the unexpected discoveries one usually overlooks, the clear skies that arrive after being rained on, and the beautiful scenery just before sunset—he mutters that it is the accumulation of moments like these that makes riding something he never tires of.
He acquired this new bike while staying true to the changes in his own riding style. While he often rides alone, he looks forward to enjoying rides with various people this year, continuously seeking out paths unknown to us and eagerly anticipating weekends spent riding with friends.
I, for one, am also very much looking forward to going on a ride with him this weekend.
