With the proliferation of disc-equipped road bikes, thru-axles have replaced quick-release (QR) skewers as the standard for wheel retention. The battle over thru-axle standards for road components has largely been settled, with 100x12mm for the front and 142x12mm for the rear becoming the dominant configurations.
Amidst this transition, one of the most common questions we receive regarding Chris King hubs is:
Q: How do I convert my R45 Disc hub from 9mm QR to 12mm thru-axle?
A: The conversion process is quite simple: just use a 2.5mm Allen key to swap the axle.
However, there is one important thing to note: the compatible rear axle varies depending on the manufacturing lot.
(Note: Front axles are all the same type.)
Specifications were changed at the time the R45 Disc Centerlock model was released, and you can determine which manufacturing lot your hub belongs to by the serial number engraved on the hub shell. Please refer to the product numbers in the chart below when purchasing a conversion axle.
