– ChrisKing Technical Tips – Which one you pick 2Nut or GripNut ?

2Nut_GripNut

Chris King manufactures two types of threaded headsets. One is the traditional, standard-style threaded headset known as the "2Nut," and the other features Chris King's own proprietary mechanism, the "GripNut." In this post, we will explain the differences between these two threaded headsets, a topic we frequently receive questions about.

While these two threaded headsets may look identical at first glance, the mechanism at the top of the upper cup is different. When choosing between them, please consider these two key points: (1) whether you intend to install a headset spacer or a cable hanger, and (2) the length of your fork steerer tube.

*2Nut

The 2Nut, a traditional-style headset that uses an adjusting nut and a locknut to clamp down, is the ideal choice if you plan on using headset spacers for stack height adjustment or integrating a brake cable hanger. It is highly regarded by cyclocrossers and randonneurs around the world. Installation requires at least 5 threads of the fork steerer tube to protrude above the adjusting nut.

*GripNut

The GripNut is the best choice if you do not require spacers or a cable hanger. It features Chris King’s proprietary one-piece adjusting ring and locknut design, which uses an internal threaded collet to securely clamp the fork steerer tube. It offers a sleek appearance, greater holding power than the 2Nut, and easier adjustment. It is also an effective solution if your fork steerer is too short for a 2Nut. Installation requires 11–14mm of the fork steerer tube to protrude above the top bearing cup.

The first headset manufactured by Chris King in 1976

The history of Chris King began with this single headset. Its durability was forged and refined in the late 1970s mountain bike scene, helping it secure its current reputation. While the industry standard for headsets has shifted toward threadless and integrated designs, Chris King continues to manufacture threaded headsets as a standard part of our lineup. Both the 2Nut and GripNut are available in three sizes—1", 1-1/8", and 1-1/4"—and come in nine different colors each.

In today's cycling scene, where new standards are introduced and rendered obsolete almost annually, Chris King is an exemplary bicycle component company. We flexibly adapt to new standards while fulfilling our manufacturing responsibilities not only to our users but to society as a whole.
