Have you ever smoked a Gauloises?

You know, the one Jean Gabin is smoking in the movie.

The other day, a college girl bought a bike from us, and we went on a "delivery ride" together. Or, as I like to call it, a heart-pounding chaperone ride (lol).

She’s helped out with Aliba events before, but suddenly she said, "I want a bike, too." Of course, this wasn’t some shallow request for a "cute bike" with a heart emoji; she wanted a practical tool she could use fully for both her daily life and for fun. So, we’re going to build it up to look sharp. The bike she chose was the KONA ROVE AL. It’s an impeccable choice as a base bike.

Then, with eyes sparkling, she said, "I want to watch you assemble my bike!"
At Circles, even if it’s a complete bike, we strip it down entirely and have our mechanics rebuild it properly. She wanted to see that entire process.

She requested JUS as her mechanic. She and her friend watched the whole time. That’s a great way to deepen your understanding of your own bike.

Then she added, "Once it's built, I want to ride it home!"
I get the sentiment, but her place is about 80km away, right?
So, I decided to ride with her.

She seemed fine for the first 60km or so, and for someone riding drop bars for the first time, she wasn't wobbling at all. It was almost anticlimactic for a delivery ride, though by the end, she started complaining that her legs were tired, which was kind of cute (lol).

For a college student these days, asking "Who’s Monsieur?" is fair enough, but the lyrics to "Have You Ever Smoked Gitanes"—which uses cigarettes as a metaphor—are important in any era, for any situation. Watching her eyes sparkle as her world expanded with her new bike, I wiped my own jaded eyes and hoped that she, too, would fall in love with cycling. Ride safe & have fun!
