[Vol. 7] First Aid for Body and Bicycle: Preparing for "What Ifs" at the Autumn Field Workshop

Hello everyone! This is Daisaku from Culture Club.

Before we knew it, that humid summer ended, and we’ve entered a season where the wind feels pleasant and the sky looks high. When it’s this cool, you just can’t help but want to ride your bike somewhere far away.

By the way, this cool weather is about as comfortable as the Hokkaido touring trip I went on recently. The best time of year for cycling is here!

Please check out Bey-chan’s blog for more on the Hokkaido tour!

I spend a lot of time having fun on my bike like this, but one thing that’s always in the back of my mind is "sudden trouble."

I’m talking about physical issues like scrapes or fractures from a fall during a ride, and mechanical issues like flat tires or a snapped chain.

Have you ever been on a ride—or even since you bought your bike—and wondered, "What should I do if I get a flat?" Or maybe, "I sort of know how to treat injuries, but I've never actually learned it properly..."?

More realistic, more practical.

As the title suggests, this post is about our upcoming first-aid workshop. The goal is to help you handle those anxieties and deal with actual trouble if it ever happens.

By the way, this session will be held in the "fieldwork style" that was very well received in our 5th workshop!

Classroom learning is important, but by getting on your own bike and taking the class outside—just like when you face real trouble—you’ll gain more realistic and practical knowledge and skills.

Bicycle maintenance especially depends on the bike, as the types of tools, how to use them, and how to handle the bike can vary. I will take a look at everyone’s bike on the day so I can provide content that suits you best!

Also, for this session, I’ve split the training over two days by difficulty level.

October 4th (Sat) [Day 1]: Basics to Intermediate

On Saturday the 4th, we will ride to a nearby park with everyone and hold the lecture there.

  • Basic injury response: Practicing first aid for common cycling injuries like scrapes and bruises.
  • Mechanical trouble: Learning how to handle basic issues like derailleur problems or broken chains.
  • Intermediate: Learning more specialized knowledge, such as how to assist an unconscious person and the recovery position.
  • Mechanical trouble: Looking at the structure of brakes, which are directly related to safety, and learning how to adjust them.

October 5th (Sun) [Day 2]: Advanced

  • Emergency training: Learning specific points of caution when calling an ambulance or air ambulance, and how to convey the situation accurately.
  • Practical demonstration: Cycling to a nature-rich area in the city to practice transporting an injured person and reporting details over the phone in an actual mountain setting.

A purchase that leaves no physical trace: "Knowledge and Experience"

Unlike buying parts or a bicycle, "buying knowledge and experience" leaves nothing tangible in your hands. Because of this, some might find it a bit intimidating to participate.

However, we believe that "knowledge and experience" to enjoy your hobby safely is essential for the act of "play." We believe that by sharing what you've learned with friends and putting it into practice, you can gain something more important than any physical purchase. Let's make your cycling life safer, freer, and enjoyable for a longer time through this workshop!!
