[6th Session] First Aid for Body and Bicycle Workshop Information!!

Hello everyone! This is Daisaku from Culture Club.

Before we knew it, we’ve reached our 6th First Aid Workshop! Here are the details:

6th Body ✖️ Bicycle First Aid Workshop

Date & Time: August 9th (Sat) 16:00-19:00 [Beginner Level]
August 10th (Sun) 16:00-19:00 [Intermediate Level]

Venue: Culture Club

Capacity: Up to 10 people each day / Participation Fee: 4,000 yen
(Includes a body first aid kit)

Our June workshop was held outdoors while riding our bikes. Using our own bikes that we ride every day made the content much more realistic—especially since, coincidentally (?), we actually ran into some trouble along the way.

I’d love to hold this one outdoors too, but as you know, we’re in the middle of this intense heat through the end of July. If we held an outdoor workshop in mid-August, at the peak of summer, everyone would collapse! (Actually, we were pretty close to the limit back in June, haha.)

We are planning to hold an outdoor (field work) session sometime in October or November, so please look forward to that!

This time we have separate Beginner and Intermediate levels!

As mentioned at the beginning, in addition to basic content, starting this time we will also be offering a session that goes a bit deeper into the subject.

We are entering that fun season where we have more opportunities to go out for rides or climb mountains.

While the fun increases, so does the risk of accidents and injuries. However, we don't want you to view this negatively; rather, we run these workshops because we want you to engage with your activities even more positively than before.

With that in mind, we are incorporating advanced knowledge on top of the essential basics.

In the "Body First Aid" segment led by Yoshinori Takagi, also known as Nobu-san (whom we've introduced in previous workshop notices), the first day covers basics, and on the second day (Sunday):

  • Review of wound care: Infection control and treatment methods
  • How to handle someone who has lost consciousness
  • What to do while waiting for help
  • How to immobilize a foot/ankle injury
  • Understanding how to hand over care to medical professionals and how to report clearly

We will delve deeper into topics like responding to unconscious individuals or immobilized victims. We’ll also cover how to determine whether to call an ambulance, making the training more practical for real-world scenarios.

It’s a bit of a grim topic, but this is exactly what we wanted to learn!

On a personal note, back in the day, I was descending a mountain pass with a friend when I took a turn too fast, couldn't make it, and crashed into a reflector on the side of the road. I was sent flying by the impact, my helmet shattered (I realized then how important helmets are), and I ended up in a situation where I couldn't get back up.

All I could do at that time was call out to them, help them into a more comfortable position, and—thankfully, once they were able to move—go back to get the car. To those who have taken a first aid course, you might think "that was enough," but I still haven't forgotten the sense of helplessness I felt back then, and I’ve always wondered in the back of my mind if what I did was okay, or what the best possible action would have been.

Though the severity varies, I’m sure many of you have had similar experiences, haven't you? There may not be a single clear answer, but this will definitely be an important session to help us get closer to one!

Bike First Aid will also be held in Beginner and Intermediate levels!

We’re also splitting the bicycle workshop into Beginner and Intermediate levels!

I, Daisaku, will be your instructor.

We’ll cover the "tire trouble" questions we’ve received, and continue to teach "how to deal with derailleur trouble" in the Beginner level. For the Intermediate level, we’ll dive into derailleur trouble and "brakes," which are even more critical to safety.

Drawing on 10 years of diverse riding experience and the mechanical troubles I’ve encountered, we will learn practically how to handle unavoidable issues like flat tires and broken chains, as well as preventative measures, all while incorporating Q&A. Let’s get our hands dirty and build those troubleshooting skills!

(I also hope to touch on the trouble I ran into at the OMM just the other day!)

By learning first aid from both the perspective of the body and the bike, let's enjoy cycling freely and with peace of mind, no matter where we are.

We look forward to seeing you all there!
