I've had the valuable experience of racing in UCI-2 events for two consecutive days this weekend, and today, I’m feeling a sense of fulfillment and lingering excitement from that explosive energy, while also feeling that my body hasn't fully recovered from the fatigue. We closed the shop on 11/16 and 11/17 to participate in the Nobeyama Cyclocross.
This time, in addition to the Circles tour, we also hosted booths for SimWorks and Earlybirds Breakfast, so it was a lively trip with a big group of us!
For me, Nobeyama CX has been the season opener every year. Until I get here, I’ve always spent my days training in the dark, never quite knowing where I stand. This year, however, I had already raced once at Kansai CX Makino and felt good about my form, so I was able to approach the race without unnecessary pressure. Above all, it was great to be able to go to a race and compete alongside people I don’t usually get to race with.
In UCI races, the 80% rule is applied; if you fall 80% or more behind the lap time of the leader, you are pulled from the race at that point. With a stellar field including Japanese National Champion Yu Takenouchi, it becomes a survival race the moment the starting gun goes off. I started near the back with number 54, so my priority was to get as far forward as possible. I raced with the mindset that even if I burned out, I wouldn’t let go once I latched onto someone. One mistake could be fatal, so I tried to take corners cautiously while still maintaining an aggressive stance. Ultimately, I didn't finish on either day. I definitely want to ride to the finish line next year. There were riders who started behind me who managed to finish, and I learned a lot by watching how they rode.

Thank you to everyone who cheered for me, shouting "Shige!" or "Ikeyama-san!" ("Shige" is just fine, haha). I heard you loud and clear, though I didn't have the composure to respond at the time. I’ll keep working hard. My next races are the Kansai CX Miami (UCI) this weekend, followed by the National Championships next month. My form isn't bad, so I’m going to ramp it up again from here! Please keep rooting for me!
And I have immense respect for Mr. Yano of Yatsugatake Bicycle Studio and everyone else involved in this wonderful event. Thank you so much! It’s become a more amazing event year after year, and I’m honored to be involved in this way. I hope to see you all again at Nobeyama next year!
