I’ve been to all sorts of festivals across the country on our BIKEto Festival series, but I’ve realized that the most important element for feeling the true power of a festival is the sheer energy and intensity of the atmosphere.
Festivals aren’t something you do because someone told you to. Even if they end up having an economic impact, they aren't done for money—they are for entertainment, self-expression, and honor. They are accompanied not by a flimsy word like “lifestyle,” but by a strong will and intense passion that you could call a “way of life.”

This applies to modern festivals and events as well, and "Hashinoshita" (Under the Bridge) is one of the festivals where that intensity is strongest. You feel it in the energy and appearance of the people who gather there and the people who create it—a presence you can't just take lightly. I can photograph the venue, but I still feel hesitant to photograph the people. (Even though they’re good people despite how intimidating they might look.)
Of course, there are plenty of people who might find that overwhelming power off-putting. But if you’re even a little bit interested, this is a scene you won't find anywhere else in Japan or the world, so I highly recommend you experience it at least once.
This year, it’s being held right in the middle of Obon. We will, of course, be setting up our bicycle parking service, "CYCLE CLOAK." And Circles will also be hosting a BIKE to Hashinoshita ride! Let’s go together!! Just be sure to take care and not get heatstroke from all the excitement and the summer heat!

Cycle Cloak at Hashinoshita
Hashinoshita originally started in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Another incredible thing about this festival is that most of the power on-site is supplied by solar panels. That’s why it’s only right to get there by bicycle as much as possible.
We will be setting up a "Cycle Cloak" bicycle parking service next to the stadium, just after crossing the Toyota Ohashi Bridge. Please come by bicycle! The service is free to use. There is no reception desk, so please make sure to lock your bike securely.
