With the cold wind now making us truly feel the arrival of autumn, it’s about time we felt like putting on some warmer clothes.

We spend our days living in a free-spirited, casual style, so we want something we can just grab and throw on without a second thought. Something that works over a T-shirt, over a button-down or chambray shirt, and, of course, something we can wear over a thicker cut-and-sew or warm winter clothing as the cold intensifies.

Furthermore, the clothes we prefer, as people who incorporate bicycles like Surly and Salsa into our daily lives, naturally tend to have a slight whiff of rugged American style. The buffalo check, characterized by its large grid pattern once used in traditional American hunting jackets, has long been loved as a staple of casual wear, and naturally, it's a favorite of ours too.

Driven by the desire for a piece that can be worn casually as both a shirt and an outer layer, and which carries a bit of that earthy, rugged feel, we reached out to our trusted allies at DEEPER’S WEAR—with whom we also collaborated on our summer FAST PASS SHORTS—and brought this DEFENDER SHIRT to life.

Since we were the ones who requested it, we made sure it would be something that people who use bikes as their daily companions would love to wear. We had it finished with a texture that lets you wear it hard and often, and reach for it without hesitation even after the fabric has worn in and gotten nice and soft.

For those who ride bikes, clothing for the coming season needs to be warm, but since you are constantly moving and generating your own heat, it's vital that it’s not *too* warm. The fabric used this time is a heavy flannel with a lightly brushed interior, which provides just the right amount of warmth. Additionally, the biggest enemy when cycling in winter is the cold wind. To counter this, the shirt features a lining only on the front panels, which also contains a thin layer of insulation, providing that extra bit of warmth right where you need it most.

Hand-warmer pockets aren't something you use much while actually riding, but under the cold sky, you often find yourself wanting to warm your hands up. When they’re there, you realize how valuable they actually are.

This Defender Shirt is perfect for cycling, but it’s just as easy to wear in your everyday life. Please consider adding it to your wardrobe from this autumn until the end of winter.
