For some reason, when winter comes around, I get the urge to wear a messenger bag.
And I get the urge to ride a fixed-gear bike.
Well, part of it is probably just because “it’s too hot in the summer and a pain to carry a bag,” but there’s another reason too.
Exactly 10 years ago, when Circles was born, that winter was when I first encountered fixed-gear bikes.
The year or two after that, I learned about the existence of “messenger bags” and I remember walking through the blue doors of Circles for the first time thinking, “If I carry this while riding through town, I’ll look so cool!”
I didn’t have the money to buy one back then, and when I rushed back to Circles on payday the following month...
It was already gone, wasn’t it…
Later, during an alleycat race (NUTS), seeing *that guy* wearing that exact messenger bag with a smug look on his face was a huge shock…
Those feelings of regret, that initial impulse, and the sense of nostalgia are what define my “Why does it feel like winter means messenger bags and fixed-gear bikes?” mentality. So, if you see me riding my fixie with a messenger bag on, just think to yourself, “Oh, I see, JUS is carrying his sorrows with him.”
