The temperatures have dropped lately. Feeling the chill this morning and seeing the forecast showing a high below 20°C, I commuted to work thinking that the cold season is finally upon us.
If asked whether I prefer summer or winter, I would answer winter without hesitation.
Part of it is that I naturally run hot, but also because the crisp air provides such stunning scenery, and above all, because cycling in the cold warms my body up gradually, letting me feel my blood circulating and giving me a strong sense of being alive.
Winter is truly the best season for cyclists. That is why I love riding in the winter.
There are many important things for getting through a winter like this—warm jackets, gloves, and so on—but I actually think the most important thing is the base layer you wear against your skin.
Even if you're cold for the first ten minutes, your body warms up once you start riding. On top of that, your body temperature fluctuates significantly depending on changes in weather conditions and whether you are climbing or descending. I've compiled a list of base layers to help you stay comfortable during these conditions in our Staff Recommendations.
There is a wide variety available, including merino wool and those using specialized synthetic fibers, depending on the intended use and temperature range, but I have carefully selected base layers that each offer features such as:
・Quick-drying even when you sweat
・No stressful, clingy sensation against the skin
・Excellent heat retention
・Resistant to post-sweat chill
・Comfortable to wear
・Odor-resistant
From items functionally designed as a base for cycling jerseys to those that can be worn casually as everyday base layers, you are sure to find one that fits your needs. Many of these are easier to try out compared to other apparel like cycling jerseys, so if you are wondering how to prepare for winter, why not start by trying out a base layer to ensure a comfortable season?
