Beyond cycling, Luke from Truce Designs is an expert in marine sports like surfing and sailing, as well as trekking.
I truly believe he is a master of play. He draws inspiration from all kinds of fields and channels that form and function directly into his own bag designs. We have just restocked the Drop Liner Backpack, a classic Truce Designs item, in a wide variety of sizes and colors, so I would like to introduce it to you once again.
By focusing on materials like sailcloth used for yachts and fabrics used for drysuits—which are both lightweight and incredibly durable—he has created a backpack that offers a unique carrying experience. Unlike traditional heavy-duty messenger bags, it fits the body gently even during intense movement and boasts versatility across any field.
Thankfully, many people around us understand these benefits. It is widely loved for daily activities like commuting to work or school, errands around town, and as a companion while traveling, as well as for outdoor activities outside of cycling like hiking, trekking, and fishing.
The materials used for sailcloth and drysuits are designed to save lives, so they boast performance that stands out even in the fabric industry. This bag, which makes the most of these materials, combines waterproofing, durability, and a lightweight feel. It is also comfortable to wear for long periods, and by using the chest and waist straps, you can minimize the bag's movement during strenuous activity. Also, it might be hard to believe, but since the interior compartment uses highly waterproof material, there's no need to worry about your things getting wet on a rainy day. Above all, based on my experience of wearing it for my commute almost every day, my belongings have never gotten wet, even in the rain.
The pockets located on the flap and in the center are the perfect size for organizing small items. The two detachable straps are convenient for securing and carrying items that don't fit inside the bag. Once you get off your bike, you can even tuck your helmet under the flap.
As shown in the photos, you can strap a wheel to it for transport, and another feature is the ability to store the shoulder straps in the back waist band to carry it like a simple duffel bag.
【Truce Designs】Drop Liner Backpack Small ¥44,000 (excluding tax)
The Small size is convenient for day touring or "rinko" rides where you need to carry a change of clothes. It can also accommodate a hydration pack, making it recommended for trail riding.
【Truce Designs】Drop Liner Backpack Medium ¥47,000 (excluding tax)
The Medium size is great for more daily scenarios like commuting, as well as for trekking, backcountry trips, and fishing. As seen in the photo, you can stow your helmet in the flap once you get off the saddle. This size can also fit a hydration pack.
I have been using this bag for over four years myself; although one of the plastic buckle parts eventually broke (I found a replacement that fit), the bag itself hasn't sustained any damage and is still in prime condition for daily use. Unlike standard messenger bags, and distinct even from ultra-light gear, this "Truce-ness" is something only he—a man who knows play inside and out—could create, and I have no doubt that it will continue to win over fans. Take my word for it and try it on at the shop just once.
There's something incredibly cool about tearing through a trail with this bag on your back, not even worrying about the mud splashes.
