Patagonia's iconic base layer series has been revamped starting this season. Whether as an everyday undershirt or as a base layer for rides and races, Patagonia base layers have become an indispensable part of my life. Last time, I introduced the Daily and Lightweight models for the spring through autumn seasons. This time, the Midweight and Thermalweight models—perfect for autumn and winter—have arrived in stock, so I'd like to introduce them!
The Midweight model, which corresponds to the old Capilene 3, keeps you comfortable in a wide range of situations and is the most versatile base layer available. It may feel a bit thinner than the previous Capilene 3, but the interior features a brushed grid pattern (textured surface) that provides better moisture-wicking and perspiration management while offering just the right amount of warmth.
There is also one major change. The silhouette has shifted from Asia Fit (a tight fit for the Japanese market) to Slim Fit (a moderately slim cut), making it easier to wear as a standalone piece. To be honest, I was a bit unsure at first, but this fit is exquisite and makes layering easier, which makes it feel like an even more accessible and versatile piece to use.
This is the most heat-retaining model in Patagonia's lineup of base layers. The micro-grid fleece structure on the inside doesn't just wrap your body in warmth; it also provides superb breathability. Since I sweat quite a bit even in winter, breathability is crucial! Furthermore, it is lightweight, low-bulk, and features odor-control technology. The thumb loops, which prevent the sleeves from riding up, are also a nice touch.
Whether you are a first-time Capilene user or a long-time fan, I am sure you will love these. Just be mindful of the sizing if you are used to the previous versions!
