When choosing a helmet, what criteria do you use? Whether it’s weight, aerodynamics, looks, or comfort, I think it’s up to each individual to decide what they value most.
Personally, I prioritize comfort first, and then looks. Of course, functionality is something I consider, but for me, that comes second or third.

My top recommendation is GIRO, specifically their Asian Fit series. I used to wear CATLIKE and standard GIRO models, but since this series was released, I haven’t worn anything else.
It may go without saying at this point, but the Asian Fit models are wider and shorter front-to-back compared to the standard ones. Japanese people are often described as having wide feet and high insteps, and the same can be said for our head shapes.

Looks are also a major factor, and among the helmets available in Asian Fit or those generally considered to fit Japanese heads well, I simply prefer the designs from GIRO.

From GIRO comes the new 2019 model: the Syntax MIPS AF.

¥14,600 (excl. tax)
The Syntax, which features Mips and arrives as the successor to the well-regarded SAVANT Asian Fit model, is wide and deep. It wraps around my wide head comfortably and provides a real sense of security.
It has a well-balanced shape overall, looks neat, and matches a variety of styles, from cycling jerseys to casual attire.

The shell is covered in polycarbonate and features Mips, which is said to reduce impact to the head by approximately 30% in the event of a crash. Regarding the ventilation concerns that often come with Mips, this model uses a specialized design that ensures smooth airflow to keep your head cool.
If you’ve struggled to find a helmet that fits right, I really encourage you to give this one a try. And if you are buying your first helmet, I highly recommend adding this to your list of options.
Also, this season, GIRO will be releasing high-end Asian Fit models like the Synthe and Aether. The Synthe has been released in previous seasons to great acclaim, but for 2019, it’s being re-released as an Asian Fit model with Mips. The Aether, while a cutting-edge model, is now available in Asian Fit from the start.
I’ll provide more details on these two models once they are in stock, but based on trying them on at the manufacturer's exhibition, the Syntax had the most low-profile, clean silhouette. If you prioritize comfort and want a helmet with a more understated silhouette, I recommend the Syntax.

Just like shoes, it’s hard to know if a helmet truly fits without trying it on. Please come by the store and test it out for yourself.
In-store, we have all sizes: S, M, and L, and three colors: Matte Black, Matte White / Silver, and Matte Midnight / Blue. Of course, if the manufacturer has them in stock, we can also order other sizes and colors for you.
