As we reach the second half of October, I imagine many of you are starting to prepare for winter. I have also just begun maintaining my gear and checking my clothing in preparation for the winter mountain season.

For me, the base layer is the most critical component when climbing in winter. This is because I am sensitive to both heat and cold, making body temperature regulation extremely difficult. I sweat more than the average person as soon as I start climbing, and then during breaks, that sweat quickly strips away my body heat. When I wore synthetic materials, I found the chill unbearable, and there is also the risk that this could lead to hypothermia.
I switched to a merino wool base layer, and thanks to the unique properties of merino wool—which keeps the body from getting cold even when sweating profusely, and resists odors even after wearing the same garment for days—I’ve been able to stay comfortable.
With that in mind, some powerful new winter allies have arrived from ACLIMA.
ACLIMA was established in Norway in 1922. Their wool garments are highly regarded throughout Europe, and are worn by the armed forces of several NATO member countries. It is also worth noting that they develop many products outside of their commercial line, such as flame-retardant wool adopted by police, fire departments, and factory workwear across Europe.
From the ACLIMA lineup, let me first introduce the Warmwool Granddad Shirt.

【ACLIMA】 Warmwool Granddad Shirt
The Warmwool Granddad Shirt is one of the most popular mid-weight pieces in the ACLIMA underwear range. It uses 100% merino wool fibers at 20.5 microns with a 200g/m2 knit structure. It works perfectly as a standalone piece, but also functions well as an inner layer due to its exquisite thickness—neither too thin nor too thick. It is a base layer that keeps you comfortable and prevents you from cooling down even if you sweat in cold environments.

Merino wool offers excellent insulation while its natural fiber structure provides moisture-wicking and breathability, resulting in a consistently dry and comfortable fit. Other notable features include a soft feel against the skin and antibacterial properties that help suppress odors.

Once you put it on, you'll understand—merino wool has a comfort level that synthetics simply cannot match. It’s the kind of comfort that makes you want to wear it every day once you've tried it.

The men's design features large buttons made of wood chips, making it look less like sportswear and more like a sweater you could wear in everyday life—a key appeal of this item. The ribbed cuffs also contribute to a design that blends seamlessly into daily wear.

The women's version has a slim, flattering silhouette.
Next, I’d like to introduce the LightWool Headover.

【ACLIMA】LightWool Headover
A 4-season headover constructed from a 140g/m2 single jersey knit using 17.5-micron, 100% merino wool ultra-fine fibers. This is a brilliant piece that functions as a neck warmer, a balaclava, or even ear muffs. It is also recommended for wearing under a helmet, making it a highly versatile item to have in your kit. It also comes in a wide variety of colors, making it a great accessory to add a pop of color to your outfit.
