Great Divide Trail
In the summer of 2017, I was hobbling through the wilderness of Wyoming, USA, with a backpack on my back. The temperature was nearly 50 degrees and there was absolutely no wind. The heat was driving me crazy, and I looked into the distance and saw a herd of horses that had been released into the wild in pioneer days, galloping along, a cloud of dust billowing in the air.
Oi! Hey! How are you doing?
I heard someone's voice in the distance. Was it an auditory hallucination caused by the heat? I thought, but when I heard the voice again, I looked in that direction and saw a two-wheeled metal horse running toward me from the distance. As I got closer, I realized it was an Asian male, about 40 years old, pedaling a mountain bike.
Oy!"
I raised my trekking poles high in the air to signal him.
'You're a Continental Divide hiker, right?
He said, "That's right! Are you a bicycle traveler?"
There are several waterproof bags strapped to my mountain bike. I had a few waterproof bags strapped to my mountain bike, but they seemed rather small for the kind of bike trip I was familiar with.
Yes," he said, "I'm a GREAT DIVIDE TRAVELER! I'm biking the GREAT DIVIDE TRAIL. I'm riding my bike on the GREAT DIVIDE TRAIL, all the way to Canada!
I didn't know there was such a thing. I didn't know there was such a thing. You are so crazy to ride a bike through this hellhole! Ha ha!
I'm going to say it right back to you! Ha ha!
We looked at each other and smiled broadly. But the heat made us thirsty, and we took a sip of the water we had taken out and drank it carefully.
