Description
Genesis] (published in 2009) is a comic book by American cartoonist Robert Crumb that is considered a faithful, literal depiction of the book of Genesis. It debuted at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list for graphic novels and on Amazon.com's list of Christian books.
Given Crumb's previous body of work and his professed denial of religion, many assumed when the book was released that it would be a satirical, blasphemous, and subversive sendup, but were surprised or disappointed to find that it was in fact a "faithful" writing of the book of Genesis.
In the preface to the book, Crumb writes that he has "faithfully reproduced the original text word for word," but it is also true that the cover of the book contains a warning that "adult supervision is recommended for minors."
The book is particularly controversial because of the explicit sexual illustrations in the text. The book has been in the limelight so much so that there is debate in the critical community over whether the artwork in the illustrations is literal or should be.
