The founder of BROOKS, John Boultbee Brooks, moved to Birmingham in 1866 and started by establishing JB Brooks & Co, which deals with horse saddles and leather goods, on Great Charles Street. In 1878, the tragic death of his beloved horse inspired his business.
Unable to afford a new horse, Mr. Brooks borrowed a bicycle from a friend, but he was dissatisfied with the discomfort of the saddle and vowed to do something about it himself.
On October 28, 1882, Mr. Brooks finally filed a patent for a revolutionary saddle manufacturing method. The padded comfort saddle, a completely new concept that was announced soon, was very innovative at the time, and it is said that many cyclists were amazed and highly praised by the saddle. This success prompted Mr. Brooks to start producing beautiful handcrafted saddles, bags and other accessories for bicycles and motorcycles. And today, as a representative of leather saddles throughout the world, the name of Brooks has become well known.
