TERASU is a project of only 200 first editions, centered on MAX HOUTZAGER, which summarizes surfing, snowboarding, biking, food and lifestyle from the perspective of a person who is passionate about the path. With roots in Marin County (north of San Francisco) and devoted to mountain biking and photography, Max retires from the race due to an injury but finds another passion for surfing there. After that, I visited Niseko in Hokkaido on a snowboard trip, and this time I was fascinated by Japanese language, food, and culture, and now Max is working in Japan to put those passions into TERASU.
TERASU is a photo book consisting of four chapters: WATER, EARTH, SNOW, and GASTRONOMY. However, each content is randomly scattered in one book. Surf, Bike, Snow, as a means of expression for people such as surfer DAN CROCKETT chasing waves in harsh environments, snowboarder TARO TAMAI of Niseko, food coordinator LENTINE ALEXIS of former professional triathlete, and SHINYA TANAKA (Circles / SimWorks). Food, and the experiences they have, such texts and impressive photos, roam the pages as if they were traveling.
The quality of the paper is not monotonous in TERASU, just as there are differences in the expression methods such as digital and analog in the expression of the photograph. The book is bound by combining papers with different finishes and thicknesses. Punk rockers have trouble with black-and-white photographs of the sea printed on matt cardboard, deep photographs printed on thin paper so that the image on the next page can be seen through, and glossy paper for dishes that show beautiful colors. TERASU also uses bookbinding as an expression method, just like making fanzine with paper. And at the end of the book, the numbers in 200 books are handwritten.
