TERASU is a project led by Max Houtzager that brings together surfing, snowboarding, biking, food and lifestyle into one photobook from the perspective of someone who is passionate about these subjects. With roots in Marin County (north of San Francisco), Max was immersed in mountain biking and photography until an injury forced him to retire from racing, where he found another passion: surfing. A subsequent snowboarding trip to Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan, led to a fascination with the language, food, and culture of Japan, which Max now applies to TERASU.
TERASU is a photobook with four chapters: WATER, EARTH, SNOW, and GASTRONOMY. However, each content is randomly scattered throughout the book. Surfer DAN CROCKETT, snowboarder TARO TAMAI from Niseko, food coordinator LENTINE ALEXIS, a former professional triathlete, and SHINYA TANAKA (Circles/SimWorks), all of whom chase waves in a harsh environment, express Surf, Bike, Snow, Food, and their experiences as a means of expression.
Just as there are differences in photographic expression between digital and analog methods, the quality of the paper used in TERASU is not monotonous. The book is bound with a combination of papers of different finishes and thicknesses. A black-and-white sea photo printed on matte cardboard, a photo with depth printed on paper so thin that the image on the next page can be seen through it, or a dish with beautiful colors printed on glossy paper. In the end of the book, there is a number of the 200 books. The numbers of the 200 books are handwritten at the end of the book.
te-rä-sū] : to illuminate
Focusing on outdoor activities such as surfing, bicycling, snow sports, and food, TERASU captures scenes of people enjoying various activities, the communities around them, and their daily lives from a unique perspective, without being bound by a single value system. TERASU/Terrace When I first saw their website, I literally could not believe what I was seeing. When we first saw their website, we felt as if it literally illuminated a world we did not yet know.
They have introduced us to their past two Gourmet Century Ride Asuke, RIDEALIVE 2015, and even delved deep into the heart of CIRCLE'S to introduce us to our community and the activity of riding.
